In the contemporary world, sustainability has emerged as an important area of research, practically in all the domains. Sustainable Development requires an integrated approach that takes environmental concerns along with economic development. In the year 2015, the United Nations (UN) presented 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to be achieved by 2030. The UN (2019) placed a strong focus on global business as a force for transformation in its SDG agenda. Despite this motivation, international business literature “has not kept pace with the expanding role of companies in sustainable development” (van Zanten & van Tulder, 2018, p. 209). The goal of sustainable development is to create a society which focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs without jeopardizing the natural ecosystem’s stability and continuity. The problem with sustainable development is that economic expansion and climate change are inextricably linked. While faster economic growth may help to alleviate socioeconomic issues such as poverty, inequality, hunger, unemployment, and social injustice, it also has a negative impact on the environment, such as overuse of natural resources and greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change, which is harmful for the human development. Additionally, ethical issues and responsible governance have received more attention from scholarly publications than corporate social responsibility (CSR), economic development, and environmental concerns (Egri & Ralston, 2008).
Sustainability and sustainable development focus on balancing that fine line between competing needs – our need to move forward technologically and economically, and the needs to protect the environment in which we and others live. Sustainability is not just about the environment, it’s also about our health as a society in ensuring that no people or areas of life suffer because of environmental degradation, and it’s also about examining the longer-term effects of the actions that humanity takes and measures required to improve it (Purvis, et al., 2019). The book aims to cover different pillars of sustainability, namely economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
Education authorities and schools were caught napping. The crisis threw the schooling system into a mode of what could be termed fixing “the aeroplane whilst in flight”, meaning school leaders and education authorities had to think on their fit and try working leadership practices that could sustain the system after temporary disruptions through compulsory closures. This crisis forced a rethink of how schools should be led, administered, and managed. Based on the above assertions, this book is justified, and authors shall present chapters which suggest cutting-edge leadership practices which will assist school leadership to navigate future disruptions and perennial challenges that the system might face.
This call for book chapters requires contributions with novel ideas and new insights which will advance school leadership epistemologies underpinned by creativity and innovation. It aims to focus on the major pillars of sustainability, i.e., Economic development, Social Development, Environment Protection, and Sustainability Education.
The call transcends and open to varied contexts (both advanced and the least advanced economies). The chapters could deploy varied methodologies and approaches including, theoretical, conceptual, and empirical.
